PANJIM: After holding charge as Superintendent of Police (North) for about one and half year, 2009-batch IPS officer Priyanka Kashyap has been transferred to Special Branch on Thursday.
SP Umesh Gaonkar, a Goa Police Service cadre officer has been appointed as SP North.
Kashyap has also been given additional charge as SP of State Police Control Room and Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), both of which were also previously held by Gaonkar.
Since she has been on sick leave since Monday, Gaonkar has handed over his previous charges to SP (IPS) Atmaram Deshpande on Thursday.
Major events during Kashyap’s stint as SP North
u In a daylight attack, over a dozen two-wheeler borne masked men attacked LPK waterfront at around 12.30 pm on August 22, 2013 and ransacked the place after beating up and tying the security guard to the gate. About six assailants including history sheeter Zenito Cardozo were arrested in the aftermath.
u On October 31, 2013 a large mob of angry African nationals held up traffic for hours at Porvorim on NH 17 to protest Nigerian Obodo Uzoma Simeon’s murder at Parra. Fifty-two Africans, including Nigerians, were arrested for attempted murder and other criminal offences.
u St Andre MLA and ex-Kala Academy chairman Vishnu Surya Wagh was manhandled and assaulted by suspected BJP supporters at Revora, on December 19, 2013 while he was returning from a kirtan programme. The attack triggered a wave of protest against the government by Wagh and his supporters.
u On June 23, 2014, a mother of three was mercilessly thrashed by her neighbours who also stuffed chilli powder in her genitals. The accused were arrested after a sustained campaign by Herald, demanding justice for the women. Assistant sub-inspector Vithu Naik who had planned to admit her to Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Bambolim was suspended.
u A sword attack at Down The Road pub on August 20, 2014 saw two youth – Raju Sarin and Rafael da Costa – seriously injured. Zaine Keith Almeida from Mapusa was arrested in the case but the crucial evidence – the sword which was allegedly thrown in the river – has not been recovered.
