Speaking to Herald, D’Souza said that since this is election year there are allegations almost every day and hence the decision was taken.
“I have taken over the reins of GMC over a year ago and I can say I have been able to put many things in place which were in a mess but still there may be some shortcomings which I don’t deny,” D’Souza said referring to allegations made of GenNext president Durgadas Kamat.
D’Souza further stated that the one-man panel will probe the GMC’s shortcomings and submit a report within 30 days. “It is not humanly possible for me to visit GMC everyday and I know the officials also may or may not be giving a true picture so it is better to appoint an independent inquiry and probe the matter,” he said.
GenNext on Friday had highlighted the pathetic conditions prevailing at the State-run GMC, after a series of complaints from the people, visiting the hospital.
Kamat had said that the NGO’s helpline has been receiving a series of calls from patient relatives about the horrifying conditions at GMC. “GMC itself requires life support,” he had said.
He said that due to a lack of beds and limited arrangements in the ICU, patients are made to sleep on the floor, while critical patients are kept waiting in general wards. “In ICU the ventilators are not functional. Also doctors and staff are least bothered about the patients,” Kamat charged.
