“The islands off the coast of Baina have high tourism potential. They can be developed and we can offer tourism facilities. The only hindrance is that part of islands belongs to the Indian Navy, while some part is privately owned. We have decided to initiate dialogue with the Defence Minister and ask him to look into the possibility of allowing the State Tourism Department to develop these islands, so that tourists visiting Goa can get an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of those islands,” said Parulekar.
He was speaking to reporters after laying the foundation stone for a developmental project of Vasco and the Baina beautification project at Baina beach on Monday evening. The projects will cost Rs 2.29 crore and are expected to be completed within a few months. The first phase of the projects will include development of pathways, pergolas, benches, landscaping, illumination and retaining walls. The second phase will include construction of toilets, shower facilities, etc.
“I agree with Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida’s suggestion to take over the islands off Baina’s coast as the navy has been harassing the locals and tourists visiting the island.”
Today, other countries are making utmost use of islands to promote tourism. If we develop these islands, then tourist inflow will further increase. I will surely take up the issue with the Defence Minister to resolve the issues as part of the islands is in the navy’s possession. Once this is done, I am sure that, along with Baina beach, we will have islands as a touristic attraction in Mormugao.”
