PANAJI: The government will constitute a committee to identify land which will be designated only for the use of scrapyards, Revenue Minister Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters at Mantralaya, Porvorim, Monserrate said, “We will form a committee to identify land which will be designated only for scrapyards. Once the land is identified, they will have to buy land and set up their facility.”
He said there are only few scrapyards which are registered with Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
The Minister said only 269 scrapyards are registered with the GSPCB while there are more than 800 scrapyards which are illegal.
”We will have to make them legal or they will have to cease to exist. We have proposed to frame and policy and identify a land. We have decided to form a committee under the chairmanship of Goa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Chairman and MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. The committee will identify the land. Once the land is identified, it will be acquired and handed over to the IDC to create an infrastructure,” he said.
The committee will also identify the illegal scrapyards and ask them to register themselves with the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Monserrate said.
