PORVORIM: The State government has announced plans to replace 40-year-old power lines in Ponda Taluka through underground cabling.
Minister for Power Nilesh Cabral informed the House that the power lines in the Ponda which were laid about 40 years back has outlived their service life and the department has initiated replacement of these lines.

Cabral said that some lines will be replaced under transmission works in case of lower tension and through underground cable in case of hypertension feeders.
He said that the administration approval has been accorded for the project related to “Work of conversion of 11 kv HT electrical network of Khadpabandh, Ponada Bazaar and part of Durbhat, Farmagudi and Curti feeders by converting to underground cable at the cost of Rs 22.11 crore.
“The tender will be floated shortly,” he said responding to the calling attention motion moved by Congress MLA Ravi Naik.
Naik said that there is fear and anxiety in the minds of the people of Ponda Constituency due to frequent interruptions in the power supply and voltage fluctuations resulting in damages to the electrical items.
The minister replied that during the monsoon there are interruptions due to falling of trees/branches during heavy rains and winds due to thick vegetation and hilly terrain in the Ponda Taluka.
“There are also cases of insulator failures due to lightning,” he said.
