PANJIM: Minister for Panchayat Mauvin Godinho on Monday said the government will undertake a comprehensive review of the entire Panchayat Raj Act to strengthen the functioning and provide stability to the grassroots level bodies.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a photography exhibition at Kala Academy, Mauvin said that the department had initially decided to get few amendments to the Act.
“But the Chief Minister said to do comprehensive review of the entire Panchayat Raj Act as there is need to strengthen the local body with new sets of rules and regulation and also to bring the required stability,” he said.
Declining to set any specific guidelines for the review, the Minister said “it is not an easy task because if you can see it, the Act has literally become reddened”.
“You know what panchayats have become…you know their functioning and end result at the grass root level. So we want to correct everything. We have to give them more powers, at the same time, have to ensure that their governance at grass root level improves,” he said.
