MARGAO: Stating that librarians have a significant role in promoting a reading culture, Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gaude announced that 48 new libraries will be established, and nearly 79 existing libraries will undergo renovation in the near future.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of National Librarian Day at Dr Francisco Luis Gomes District Library in
Navelim, Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gaude, along with Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and other dignitaries emphasised the urgent need
to promote reading habits across Goa.
Highlighting the importance of instilling a reading habit among the youth to foster intellectual growth and lifelong learning, Gaude said, “It has been observed that in rural areas, the reading habit is not growing. However, the government has planned to start 48 new libraries across Goa, and nearly 79 existing libraries will be renovated. Currently, the younger generation is experiencing significant stress, and the lack of reading habits
is preventing them from
finding relief and overcoming these challenges.”
He stated that the lack of solutions for managing stress has led many individuals to take drastic measures, including suicide.
“The government can provide infrastructure and carry out awareness campaigns, but it is essential for readers to actively visit the libraries to reap the benefits,” he added.
He said, “True development will be evident when more and more people line up at libraries, eager to gain knowledge through books.”
Kamat, in his address, highlighted that the nation will become a world power when more people take an active
interest in reading books and other literature.
“Instead of giving mobile phones, parents must focus on encouraging children to develop reading habits,” he stated.
