Govt urged to provide permanent place for Goa Konkani Akademi

Need of the hour is a good place with proper working environment; shifting office will hamper literary work and policies

PANJIM: The opposition Congress has urged the State government to provide permanent space for Goa Konkani Akademi and stop its reshuffling, now and then, which mars the progress of mother tongue.

The party also appealed to the government to fulfil its promises and construct the Konkani Bhavan and house Goa Konkani Akademi in the same building as it will help every Konkani person and writers avail the schemes and foster the literary work.

Alleging that the BJP government is hoodwinking Konkani writers and depriving budding writers from getting benefits of schemes, Congress spokesman Amarnath Panajikar recalled that with the efforts of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, Konkani was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and also attained Statehood.

“We took care that Konkani literature reaches to the last mile of the State and hence former MP late Shantaram Naik donated a mobile van library to Goa Konkani Akademi. But this government failed to maintain it and pass this ‘travelling Library’ in the nook and corners of Goa,” Panjikar lamented.

Referring to the shifting of Goa Konkani Akademi from the government colony, Patto- Panjim to the Goa Sanchar Bhavan building, he said that such shuffles should stop by providing a permanent place. Literary work and policies are handled by Goa Konkani Akademi, hence it needs a good place with a working environment. If the government keeps on shifting the office from one place to another, then it will mar the progress,” he said, adding the government should clarify whether present premises is permanent or temporary.

Panjikar also expressed surprise that though the term of Arun Sakhardande as GKA president ended in January, the government has failed to appoint the new chairman.
