Govt urged to restore house of Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes

The dilapidated condition of the nearly two centuries old house of Pai Tiatrist in Modsai, Margao, was highlighted by Ravindra Bhavan’s Member Secretary Agnelo Fernandes

MARGAO: On the occasion of 75th death anniversary of Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes, Member Secretary of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao Agnelo Fernandes urged the government to restore the old house of the renowned artiste. 

At a function held at Ravindra Bhavan on Monday, wherein the main auditorium has been dedicated to Pai Tiatrist, Fernandes, along with other staff paid homage to the great tiatr artiste. 

Joao Agostinho Fernandes, who has been honoured with the title of Pai Tiatrist was born on December 14, 1871 at Margao to Conceicao and Maria Fernandes. 

The historic house of Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes at Modsai, Margao is in dilapidated condition and is crying for attention. 

“Tiatr is the culture of Goa and contribution to this by late Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes cannot be forgotten easily. We must remember that Goa and Goans are respected all over the world and tiatr is one of the reasons for that. This tiatr, a unique form of theatre, has helped in preserving and promoting Konkani language in general,” the member secretary said. 

He further said that tiatr has turned into an industry, wherein hundreds are earning their livelihood on the stage with tiatr performances. “It is our moral responsibility to maintain the auditorium named after Pai Tiatrist and also to help the tiatr artistes in whatever way we can. Tiatr needs to be preserved,” Fernandes added. 

He also assured to resolve all the issues pertaining to tiatr performances at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
