Govt will continue support to family of late Dias, evacuated students, says Sawaikar

PANJIM: The Goa State NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar said the government will continue support to the family of late John Dias from Chandor and the Goan students who had returned from war-torn Ukraine.

Speaking about the situation with the family of Dias, Sawaikar said the government was very sympathetic towards the case and offered their condolences to the mother of the deceased.

Pointing out that the late Dias was supporting his mother financially, the NRI Commission are still coordinating with the authorities in the USA to see that his family gets whatever compensation is due to them. He added that they are also checking if the family can receive insurance and other facilities from the US government given the manner in which John lost his life.

Reportedly, the late Dias was working as a store clerk at a gas station convenience store at Houston, Texas, when he was shot at close range by a burglar who had covered his face with a mask and a hoodie. The Commission is also monitoring the investigations into that case.

Sawaikar said the commission had helped the family by getting the body back to India, Goa and completing all the necessary paperwork and formalities.

Speaking about the situation with the group of 21 Goan students who were evacuated from Ukraine due to the war and brought back safely to Goa, Sawaikar said the commission is still in touch with them and trying to address their grievances if any.

He explained that students are presently attending online classes and that some of them are even answering their exams. He added that there are some students who are in their final year and that he wished of all them all the best.

He further said that if any of the families of these students are facing any issues, be it with the fees they already paid or University related documentation, they can contact the NRI Commission for assistance. He added that he empathized with how stressful it may be for them and wanted to assure them that they have the commission’s support.
