Govt will implement road safety recommendations by ex-IPS officer P S Pasricha: CM

PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday assured members in the Legislative Assembly that the government will implement all the suggestions including those made by former IPS officer P S Pasricha to reduce road accidents in the State.

Replying to a starred question tabled by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat regarding accidents registered in the State, Sawant said that as many as 10,824 licences of drivers were suspended by Additional Director of Transport as per direction of Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety from  2019 till June 30, 2023

Expressing his concern over fatal accidents reported in the State, Sawant said that 274 persons died in fatal accidents in no precise cause can be mentioned for road accidents that lead to death. However, some of the causes were lack of awareness about road discipline, rash and negligent driving/riding, lack of pedestrian crossings, drunken/dangerous driving, lack of proper signages, reflectors, speed calming signs and not wearing helmets.

The Chief Minister said that road engineering and standards have not been neglected and violated while constructing roads in the State. However, necessary IRC guidelines and MoRTH specifications are generally followed in entirety for new projects considering the land availability constraints.

Sawant assured Kamat to implement the suggestions made by former IPS officer P S Pasricha, who ahd visited the State and inspected some of the accident-prone zones and also the guidelines of the Supreme Court Committee on Road safety, which too had visited the State in May last year.
