VASCO: To keep a tab on movement of garbage vehicles owned by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), the civic body has decided to install GPS devices on garbage trucks and compactors being used for collection of garbage, informed MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik.
According to Naik, the aim of installing GPS devise in garbage collection vehicles is to keep a track on their movement which would prevent their misuse.
He said that the GPS provides route planning, real time monitoring of vehicle movements; it also records and analyses waste collection process which is very much needed for MMC.
“Our main aim is to stop any misuse of municipal vehicles by our staff. Also, we have been receiving complaints from people from different municipal wards that our garbage vehicles failed to lift garbage from their area, thus with GSP devise we would monitor the movements of vehicles. Whether the route is followed properly, garbage has been lifted by the vehicles in their designated route, positioning of vehicles etc and all such complaints of people can be verified using GPS,” he said.
Naik informed that soon after he received the proposal on GPS, he directed the party to inspect the vehicles and ascertain how many vehicles would be fit for GPS. “We have already given the list of municipal vehicles to the party and they have been asked to prepare a report along with the quotation for GPS. Once the same is received, I will place the issue before council for its approval followed by installing GPS for our vehicles,” he said.
