Students not able to make it to colleges because of the intense competition need not worry. Right from Class VIII, they can start preparing to become postgraduate by the time they finish Class XII.
The promise to give degrees that open up the job market to them has come from Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal. Known for inventing novelties in education almost every month, he has now up his sleeves a “national vocational education framework” that he envisages to put into operation within a year.
The framework entails vocational degrees in subjects like carpentry, refrigeration, computers or those that can cater to specific industries like leather and footwear, readymade cloths.
The CBSE will offer the vocational courses that students can take up side by side with the conventional curriculum to develop the skills that ensure them start earning as soon as they complete the school education.
Sibal envisages ten levels of skills with a certificate on completing each level. One completing the first four levels will get a degree in the subject. The tenth level certificate will be equivalent to a PG degree.
He thought of this unconventional mode of vocational education for 15 crores or so youths who may not be able to pursue conventional or professional courses in higher education. He says the new framework will not only resolve the exorbitant high cost of opening new colleges but it will also meet the workforce needs of the industries.
There are a lot many private institutions imparting such courses who have passed class X or XII but without any standard of quality, while the CBSE will be preparing the students with quality education right from the time they are in Class VIII, the HRD Ministry sources point out.
