Gram sabhas serve no practical purpose, say concerned villagers

PANJIM: The concerned villagers representing various village panchayats on Tuesday submitted a representation to the Director of Panchayats seeking to discuss, address various issues and grievances. 

However, the Director was unavailable, disappointing villagers, who pointed out that the gram sabha meetings had failed to address proposals and issues raised by them.

 They stated that gram sabha meetings, which were intended to provide a platform for discussion and problem-solving, had failed to yield any results. Instead, they alleged that the some of the panchayat authorities were abusing their powers.

The villagers complained that there was no video recording and minutes of gram sabha meetings while, the budget and other information was also not given in advance to villagers. 

They also demanded probe into the funds released to village panchayats under the Finance Commission and to ensure transparency and accountability in the Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDP).
