Green activists decry contaminated condition of Colva Creek, despite ‘maintenance contract’

MARGAO: Environmentalists have criticised the condition of Colva creek despite multiple inspections and initiatives that were held in the past to clean the creek. The failure of the government to start the Colva Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) has also been cited as one of the reasons why this issue is not getting resolved.

These concerns were raised after images of the contaminated creek started going viral on social media. Plastic waste was also found in the creek while there have been complaints of foul stench and how the water is turning out to be an eyesore for tourists.

Judith Almeida of the Colva Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF) wanted to know what happened to the proposal of putting up a wire mesh above the creek to stop the dumping of waste into the creek.

She further questioned what action the Water Resources Department (WRD) is taking in this regard.

It may be recalled that WRD had recently taken steps to see that an annual maintenance contract is put in place to take care of the creek every fortnight.

Almeida, who is also the petitioner in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the Colva STP issue, reiterated that the sewage and wastewater is still being discharged into the creek and the black water in the creek is an indication of such activity.

She criticised the PWD for delaying the commissioning of the STP, which if it was functional, would have got the sewerage connections of all the commercial establishments in the popular beach destination.
