SANGUEM: Environmentalist Adv Amar Naik from Kalay-Sanguem has bitterly complained of rash and negligent driving by truckers plying from Tolem Mines to Codli thereby also flouting all conditions imposed by the High Court on ore transportation.

Naik informed that since the commencement of the ore transportation from Tolem Mines over the past couple of days, several trucks have been plying via Kalay flouting the norms and conditions of the High Court.

Naik alleged that in the absence of regulations and checks by the authorities, over 25 trucks are moving along the road within an hour. Besides, the drivers drive at a neck speed against the prescribed speed of 40 kmph.

He claimed that the truckers are using the road passing through the wildlife sanctuary to transport ore.

Naik informed that the road to Sanguem via Odlemoll-Kalay which passes through Wild Life Sanctuary was constructed to boost tourism activities in the taluka and was never meant for mining activities. He questioned the movement of trucks within the precincts of wildlife sanctuary and whether this is permitted under the Forests Rules.

Naik informed that due to constant movement of trucks laden with mineral ore from Tolem via Kalay, has endangered the lives of the locals. Moreover, the problems faced by the villagers stand all the more compounded given the narrow condition of the road.

Naik said mines owners continue to flout the rules despite directions from the police at a meeting held at Curchorem to follow norms and conditions laid by the High Court on ore transportation.
