Green urges EIA on grounded naphtha vessel

BICHOLIM: Environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar has asked the government to carry out an environment impact assessment (EIA) of the naphtha carrying vessel before breaking it.
Speaking to media, Kerkar stated that the vessel is a danger to the State. “The work of breaking the vessel will be taken up; this is a big danger for the State. We already know how River Princess had created problem for the State both financially as well as to the environment,” Kerkar stated.
He said that before breaking the vessel, the government should keep in mind some things. “Environment Impact Assessment should be done and only after taking such advice further work should be taken up. If this is not done, the naphtha from the vessel could spill into the sea and lead to some serious problem for the nature,” Kerkar warned.
He said that it could affect the sea as well as the people who are living within the vicinity. “If we want to avoid this problem and save nature, EIA is needed and only after expert opinion, further action should be taken” Kerkar stated.
