Grossly understaffed, Verna police station struggles to function

MARGAO:  The Verna police station, which caters to a sizeable jurisdiction covering the Verna Industrial Estate and nine village panchayats, is presently functioning with a single police sub inspector (PSI). Reliable sources said that the day-to-day functioning of this police station has been badly hit as some staff members have a weekly day off, while others claim to be sick and have taken long absences of leave.

For instance, out of the three PSIs attached to the Verna police station, one is on leave while a lady PSI has allegedly not reported to the police station for around five months, even though she has a limited number of sick leaves to her credit.

For the past several days, the police station is being run only by the police inspector, one PSI and a few constables.

Owing to this shortage of manpower, running of the police station and attending to crime calls, patrolling and bundobast has become a problem, and the available staff is kept on their toes, said sources. They added that this matter of inadeqaute staffing was brought to the notice of a senior police official, but no steps have been taken to allot more personnel to the PS.
