MARGAO: The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) is preparing to celebrate Seafarers Day on June 25 in Margao, which may reignite discussions on the long-pending notification of the pension scheme for seafarers. The event will be held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, and the theme for this year’s celebration is ‘MARPOL at 50 – our commitment goes on’, said Frank Viegas, President of GSAI.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the government’s intention to make the scheme permanent during the last Assembly session, and GSAI recently urged the government to officially notify the same.
“The government has shown due respect to our seafarers who have made great sacrifices and faced hardships during their service. It is important to recognize their contribution to the maritime industry and provide them with pension schemes so they can retire happily while continuing to contribute to the economic welfare of the Goan community,” stated Viegas.
Viegas highlighted that many retired seamen and widows depend on the pension scheme for their daily livelihood. The scheme has provided essential financial support to retired seamen, those who are medically unfit as well.
Seafarers play a crucial role in the shipping industry by transporting goods and commodities across the oceans. “They endure long periods away from home, sacrificing time with their families, and often work under dangerous conditions. Therefore, it is vital to honour their efforts and recognize their contributions on this special occasion,” added Viegas. Chairman of IDC and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco will be Chief Guest at the event.
GSAI has also extended invitations to N. Vinodkumar, Chairperson of Mormugao Port Authority and NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar, to attend the celebration.
