GSBB directs WRD, TCP and Agriculture Dept to take action

PANJIM:  The Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) has now written to various government departments concerned about the mud filling of low lying paddy fields and Naukhazan Lake by Rail Vikas Nagam Limited (RVNL) in Guirdolim village.

The letter was sent by GSBB Member Secretary Dr Pradip Sarmokadam to the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department (WRD), the Chief Town Planner of the Town and Country Planning Department (TCP) and the Director of the Directorate of Agriculture

The GSBB also forwarded the detailed report sent to its office by Agostine Antao, Chairperson of the Guirdolim Village Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) on this issue.

Taking cognisance of the damage caused to biodiversity in the area due to the work by the Railways for double tracking, the GSBB asked the three departments to verify the concerns raised, as the matter comes under the purview of their respective departments.

“We request you to take the necessary action on the matter pertaining to your department. An action taken report may be sent to this office,” said Dr Sarmokadam.

It may be recalled that the Guirdolim BMC and village panchayat had conducted an inspection of the area that was also inspected earlier by the WRD, which had issued an immediate stop work order to the RVNL.
