GSL in running to build weapons intensive destroyers

PANJIM: The response from Indian companies to tenders from the Defence Ministry is still tepid due to the absence of capability. This was articulated by RAdm Shekhar Mittal, Chairman & Managing Director, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on the sidelines of a session organized by the CII on Industry Defence linkages.
He expressed his frustration at the fact that major Indian companies in the industry were just not able to fulfill the requirements. He, however, conceded that as the years went by, the situation was gradually improving. PSUs, he said, were providing technology, handholding to increase the pace of this process and outsourcing was increasing significantly every year.
The CMD revealed that Goa Shipyard was one of the shipyards nominated for the construction of two destroyers which were very weapon intensive. This will be in collaboration with the Russians. The other shipyards in the running are Pipava in Gujarat, Mazgaon in Mumbai and Garden Reach in Kolkatta.
He said Goan entrepreneurs who registered with him for a specific area in a tender would be able to ask for tenders in that specific technical from other yards.
