PANJIM: Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) on Thursday said it is against the centenary celebrations of Vasco town and demanded that the port town be named as Murgao.
Addressing the media, GSM president Atmaram Goankar said, “BJP MLA Carlos Almeida has initiated the centenary celebrations of Vasco. GSM is against any such celebrations. It is shame for Goans that Goa’s city is named after a cruel person like Vasco da Gama. It is another shame that this name has continued even after Goa is liberated.”
He added, “It is an insult to the freedom fighters who have laid down their lives for liberation of Goa. It is an act towards denationalisation of Goans and it does not look good for a party like BJP. We urge the local people to form a committee to oppose such programs. We at GSM will support any such committees.”
He wondered why BJP and MGP are silent and demanded that both parties declare their views on the issue. GSM also demanded that the State government not celebrate the Vasco naming celebrations.
