MARGAO: Goa State Pollution Control Board on Thursday issued a notice to a fish processing unit at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate for violation of the consent to operate terms issued by the Board under the Water Act.
The unit has been served a notice to show cause within seven days why appropriate action under the Water Act should not be initiated for operating the unit in a manner that is causing environmental pollution in the vicinity.
The notice issued by Member Secretary Levinson Martins to Ms Quality Export has warned of action against the unit, including directions for closure of the unit.
The GSPCB’s notice comes in the wake of inspection by the Board which revealed that the effluent treatment plant of the unit was not in operation at the time of the inspection and the log book was also not maintained.
GSPCB said the inspection had revealed that a fresh soil cover was allegedly put on some portion of the open plot outside the unit premises. Martins said that analysis of the ETP has indicated that the Biological Oxygen Demand and Chemical Oxygen Demand parameters, besides suspended solids, exceeded the permissible limits.
The issue of pollution has come in for severe condemnation by the villagers staying in close vicinity of the industrial estate.
