GSPCB rectifies Vani Agro ‘typing error’, permits higher production capacity

Amends existing consent to permit production of 26.50 kilo litres per month; in original application company had sought permission to produce 26.50 litres monthly

PANJIM: Amidst opposition by locals to the project, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has amended the Consent to Establish granted to Vani Agro Farms Pvt Ltd for setting up an alcohol and brewery unit at Amdai in Sanguem, by allowing them to brew a larger amount of alcohol per month.
Terming it as a ‘typing error’, GSPCB at its Board meeting held on Wednesday decided to issue an amendment to the Consent to Establish issued earlier as sought by the project proponents.
In a fresh application to GSPCB on May 26, the company had asked to revise the quantity of production of extra neutral alcohol at 26.50 ltrs per month to 26.50 kilo litres per month.
“We have decided to amend the existing consent granted to Vani Agro,” GSPCB member secretary Levinson Martins told Herald.
As per the minutes of the meeting available with Herald, it has been stated that “apparently it appears to be a typing error and has continued from the mistake made in the application of the unit”.
“The waste water generation in the application is 350 kilo litres per day and commensurate with the production of 26.5 kilo litres per day of extra neutral alcohol and 1.5 kilo litres per day of impure spirit. These figures also match with the quantity mentioned in the EIA report ie 28 KLD,” it added.
“The unit has also has submitted that there will be zero effluent discharge, including Environment Management Plan,” the Board observed.
Last month Goa Foundation had petitioned GSPCB demanding that the consent to establish granted to Vani Agro, be withdrawn as the permission may play havoc with the pristine environment of the area.
The project is under severe criticism as it is been widely opposed by the locals from Amdai.
