PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) will now have to undertake assessment of pollution emission by cement manufacturing units in the State to ensure their compliance with environmental norms.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), in directions issued to its counterparts across the country, including Goa, asked the SPCBs to assess cement manufacturing units on a case-to-case basis and obtain a clear and specific roadmap for compliance with each parameter under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986, thereby binding the industry to implement the road map.
The assessment would be with regard to compliance with standards related to various parameters such as nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter.
The CPCB directions come following instructions from the Union Ministry for Environment and Forests (MoEF). MoEF is in receipt of a number of representations from the Cement Manufacturers Associations and other cement industries regarding difficulties in compliance with the notified environmental standards. Hence, it directed CPCB to instruct SPCBs to prepare a roadmap for the implementation of these standards for the industries.
