PANJIM: The incumbent Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) is likely to get further extension after the State government failed to get the desired candidate for the post of chairman and member secretary.
The-year-long term of the Board under Chairman Ganesh Shetgaonkar ended in December, last year. In January, the government had extended the term of the Board by three months, which set to be lapsed on March 31.
Sources informed that State Environment Department has proposed further extension to the Board in a bid to maintain the continuity in the smooth functioning of the pollution authority.
“The extension is yet to be approved by the government,” sources said.
Sources also informed that department will seek permission from the State Election Commission (SEC) for issuing fresh advertisement for the post of chairman and member secretary.
“We had invited applications for the two posts in October, last year. Total eight applied for the post of chairman and four for member secretary. However, only three candidates fulfilled age criteria of 56 years. Hence, it was decided that fresh advertisement, calling for more applications, be issued,” sources said.
For both the posts, the knowledge of environmental sciences and environmental management has been made mandatory. The candidate has to also be a resident of Goa for at least 15 years, and the knowledge of Konkani is mandatory while that of Marathi is desirable.
According to new guidelines, there would be 19 members’ board instead of 16 members that includes chairperson, member secretary and 17 members to be nominated by the State government to represent interest of agriculture, fishery or industry or trade and local authorities functioning within the State.
The recruitment would be done by the Selection Committee on contract or deputation basis.
