PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board has decided to set up advanced laboratory for chemical analysis at Saligao and a regional office at Margao, to upgrade its expertise.
Similarly, the Board has decided to appoint former director of prosecution S B Faria as special counsel who will guide the board and represent its interest in various Courts and Tribunals. The proposals were put forward before the GSPCB board of directors meeting held on Monday for approval.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, GSPCB chairman Jose Manual Noronha said that the board realizes that it needs to modernize and create efficient operating systems to achieve ideal environmental conditions in the state.
Noronha said that Board proposes to shift all the operations pertaining to South Goa district to the regional office at Margao, which would be housed at the Old Collectorate building.
Speaking about the laboratory, Chairman said that currently the lab is functional at Dempo Towers having a built up areas of about 400 sq mtrs. “The board has installed various equipment to carry out analysis of samples. But the board is facing objections from other residents of tower for handling of cylinders and fume hood,” he said.
Hence, the Board proposes to establish its laboratory in the land available with the directorate of science, technology and environment at Saligao with total area of 4800 sq mtrs.
Noronha said that the Board would be shortly recruiting additional 17 staff in the technical field to boost is manpower resources.
