MARGAO: Upon the complaint of residents the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), along with Urban Health Centre, Margao (UHC) on Monday held a joint inspection at Fatorda pertaining to release of sewage waste into the traditional pond, known as ‘Dambabali Talli’.
Urban Health Central is in the process of issuing show cause notices to the concerned housing societies which were found to be the main source of polluting the pond and ecology. At the time of inspection it was also exposed that many more housing societies are also involved in destroying, and polluting the natural resources by means of dumping the waste.
It may be recalled that recently one Nitin Nagwekar, a citizen of Fatorda has complained about the issue, and had urged the concerned department to initiate action. Several residents of Fatorda had expressed anger pertaining to illegally disposing of sewage waste from the housing society into an old pond.
Taking serious note of the same GSPCB along with Urban Health Centre, Margao held a joint inspection, wherein the allegations by the citizens proved true.
At the time of inspection it was exposed that not only the concerned housing society, but others too are involved in destroying the traditional pond, which is also a grazing ground for the cattle. Further revealed that many found releasing their sewage waste into the pond through the public drains, and nullah’s, besides waste dumped near the pond was also noticed.
Speaking to Herald, Dr Soccoro Quadros, Health Officer, UHC, said that they will be issuing notices to the two housing societies which are found releasing sewage waste into the pond, and creating health hazards in the locality.
“It was a joint inspection by GSPCB and UHC, as we had received complaints from the citizens highlighting the issue. At the moment we have found sewage waste being released into the pond through the drains by two nearby residential buildings, and hence notices will be issued to the concerned person”, he stated.
He further said that there are other sources which are also involved in polluting the pond, besides creating nuisance in the locality.
