GTDC initiates re-development work of Dona Paula jetty

Work expected to be completed by June 2021; Jetty to be thrown open for tourists from the coming tourism season

PANJIM: Almost two-and-half years after the Dona Paula jetty was closed for public and tourists for being unsafe, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has finally initiated re-development work of the jetty, which is expected to be completed by June 2021. The jetty will be thrown open for tourists from the coming tourism season.

The jetty has been shut since November, 2018 following the order of North District Collector. The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd, which was initially supposed to undertake the beautification of the jetty, in their structural analysis report, in 2018, had said that the structure is unsafe for public movement.

Panjim Mayor Uday Madkaikar, Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues along with officials of Tourism Department and Taleigao sarpanch Agnelo D’Cunha, inspected the ongoing work of Dona Paula Jetty and parking area, on Monday.

Following inspection, Madkaikar told media persons that Tourism Department has begun redevelopment work of the jetty under Central funding to the tune of Rs 11 crore.

“By first week of March, the work of new kiosks for vendors, who have been allotted carts there since years, would be accommodated again along with completing the refurbished parking area,” he said.

The work of the jetty will be completed by first week of June and will be thrown open for public and tourists from the coming season, Madkaikar informed.
