GTDC’s Anjuna project gets EC

Project includes 5 star resort with 240 rooms; Movement of heavy vehicles, building materials restricted to non-peak hours

PANJIM: Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s (GTDC) proposed 5-star resort at Anjuna has been granted an Environment Clearance by the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA).
The project, on GTDC land at Anjuna, has been pending since 2014. Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has also already granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project.
The project in 36,613 sq mtrs, which will have a 5-star resort, with 240 rooms along with restaurant, coffee shop, banquets and swimming pool. In all 175 trees will be cut for the construction, but the project proponent has assured to plant 700 additional trees.
“In all there are 2399 5 star deluxe rooms and 956 5 star rooms in Goa. There are about 12 hotels rated as 5 star and 13 hotels as 5 star A Deluxe categories in North Goa with 1577 rooms. However, none are in Anjuna,” GTDC said in its proposal.
“In this respect, GTDC has derived “Anjuna” by the lack of such facilities as one of the prime and undeveloped vantage beach properties of GTDC with panoramic view of the Arabian Sea,” it added.
SEIAA at its meeting earlier this month, granted an EC for the project, with some specific conditions. One of the prime conditions is that the project proponent has to consider an appropriate budgetary allocation benefiting the local communities and has to submit a report accordingly.
Considering the scale of the proposed construction the movement of heavy vehicles and building materials has been restricted to non-peak hours.
GTDC has been asked to prioritise the issues related to health and hygiene in complying with the matters related to waste disposal and treatment/air and water pollution/wastewater management, etc.
