The Goa University has attracted research funding of Rs 1,984 lakh in the last three years of the XIth five-year plan (2007-2012).
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dileep Deobagkar said the varsity in the ongoing plan has about 60 research projects funded through research grants provided by different agencies like University Grants Commission, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research, Indian Council for Malaria Research, etc.
He said during the Xth Plan (2002-2007) the varsity received grants to the tune of Rs 1,036 lakh. Appropriate infrastructure facilities and research expertise of faculty members has enabled GU to attract the funding from the national agencies, he stated.
Some of the projects presently underway at the varsity include Reading of paleoclimate and sea-level changes through study of mudflats, variability remote sensing study in estuarine and coastal waters of Arabian Sea and bio-optical properties of coastal waters of West Coast that have been undertaken by the Department of Marine Science.
The other important projects are underway at the Department of Microbiology, Department of Zoology, Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of Electronics, etc.
The Department of Earth Science (Govt of India) has established the Ocean Science & Technology Centre, a zonal centre to coordinate research in the Western zone.
Similarly, the Department of Microbiology has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence in Marine Microbiology. The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion & Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) has also been established at the varsity with UGC grant of Rs 200 lakh for five years.
