PANJIM: Goa University (GU) has featured among the 100 overall best institutions in the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) prepared by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.
GU stood at 98 among institutions, where Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru tops the list followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University. Goa College of Pharmacy also featured amongst the top 50 Pharmacy Colleges in the country with a ranking of 37.
GU was ranked 68th among universities, in the National Institute Ranking Framework released by the Union Ministry of Human Recourses Development.
The institutions are ranked by NIRF based on five broad parameters – teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practices (RPC), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception (PR). The five parameters with a ranking weightage given to each are then used to arrive at an overall ranking for the institutions.
While IISc topped the scoring in three of the five parameters, namely TLR, RPC and PR, Jawaharlal Nehru University scored the highest in the GO and OI parameters. Goa University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin and Delhi Technological University, New Delhi scored the lowest to rank 98, 99 and 100 respectively.
NIRF was approved and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2015 and outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. A core committee set up by the MHRD identifies broad parameters for ranking the various universities and institutions in the country.
In 2016, GU was 20th out of 233 institutions in the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) but in 2017, it dropped three times to 64th out of 724.
