PANJIM: The Goa University Students Council election has been now rescheduled on August 26. The polls, which were scheduled on Friday, were postponed at the last minute amidst high voltage drama between rival groups.
In a press statement issued, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) said that the University has postponed the elections to August 26. However, NSUI has maintained its demand that if all 28,000 eligible students are not allowed to vote, it would boycott the elections.
On Friday morning, GU rescheduled the elections to prevent possible law and order situation in the campus. The situation has remained tense since August 14 when two groups backed by BJP and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed with each other followed by complaint and counter complaint at Women Police Station.
ABVP claimed that it was in the winning position having support of more than 40 of the 78 UFRs (University Faculty Representatives) and alleged that the elections were postponed under pressure from the BJP.
However, NSUI, in its statement on Saturday said that ABVP’s claim of having the support of more than 40 UFRs was a blatant lie as it could not even produce 15 UFRs on the day of voting.
