GU wants to appoints counsellors to handle sexual harassment cases

TALEIGAO: Taking
cognizance of the recent sexual harassment cases, the Goa University (GU) has
decided to appoint counselors for the benefit of female students.

Speaking to
Herald, GU Registrar, V.V. Reddy said “The University is in process of
appointing counselors especially for the benefit of female students after the
recent sexual harassment cases”

“At present
the university just has a single temporary counselor who visits the university
on alternate days and now the university has decided to appoint another
counselor who will visit the campus on the days which the current counselor
doesn’t” said Reddy

He further
said that there is an urgent need of hiring full time counselors for the
university especially for the female students and the university has also
decided to put forward a proposal to the new government which will be formed
after March 11.

“Once we get
a full time counselor it will benefit the students as a new system will be made
of which students who wish to meet the counselor will have to give in their
names prior to the appointment and later the counselor will get to know their
problems by calling them one after another as per the appointment” he added

However, the
registrar also informed that females especially keep their problems within
themselves and but in the recent sexual harassment case the female student had
come with a verbal complain and based on that a inquiry was conducted but with
counseling the female students will get confidence of sharing their day to day
problems.
