Guarantees enshrined in Constitution can help us take country forward: Khalap

MAPUSA: The Congress Party’s North Goa Lok Sabha (LS) candidate Adv Ramakant Khalap has said that there is a need to ensure that the guarantees enshrined in the Constitution are enforced for the progress of the country.

Khalap was speaking at Datta Mandir, Sankhali as part of his campaign.

“In a democracy, everyone has a right to cast one vote, everyone has one voice, and if you see the prevailing political scenario across the country, then the Indian Constitution is extremely important. Whatever guarantees are mentioned in the Constitution, and in the Preamble, we need these for our development, we need to get these guarantees and hence these elections are important. We are working for the development and progress of the country as freedom fighters,” he said.

“Let us forget the history of the past 25 years and create new history. I am confident that we will win by a margin of 50,000 votes,” he said.

Later addressing party workers at the residence of Laxmanrao (Baba) Desai at Sankhali, Khalap said that he was instrumental in introducing the bill for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament in 1996. Stating that the BJP government took credit for this initiative, Khalap said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reminded about this in Parliament by an MP from Tamil Nadu that there is no difference in the bill he introduced and the one that I had introduced back in 1996. I have also opened so many schools in Mandrem. They tried a lot to shutdown these schools,” he said.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar said that the senior leaders of the Congress party, after taking everyone’s feedback, that took some time but have taken the decision to give a candidate that the people of North Goa wanted.

Aldona MLA and and coordinator for the party’s North Goa Lok Sabha seat Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira said the current MP Shripad Naik has not done anything to resolve unemployment and undertake development for the people.
