SANGUEM: Concerned over the severe damage caused to their sugarcane plantation by wild boars, Kurdi farmers have urged the forest department to guard their farms during night.
Affected sugarcane cultivator Ramesh Deikar informed that wild boars have caused extensive damage to his plantation. He feared further damage to the plantation if no steps are taken to drive them away during night time.
Deikar informed that initially it was acute water shortage that left the farmers worried at Kurdi Wadem in April and May. However, as the sugarcane is maturing now, the wild boar menace has become a big concern for the farmers.
Worried over further damage by wild boars, the farmers have urged the Forest Department to take immediate steps into the matter as the agriculturists are not permitted to harm the animals while protecting their produce.
Therefore, the farmers have urged the Forest Department officials either to consider payment for damage caused by wild boars or as an alternative to send their personnel to guard their farms at night.
