Despite working abroad, Menino Costa has been highlighting the State’s social and political issues on social media; on the last day 179 candidates file nominations for 33 panchayats in Salcete

MARGAO: You can take Goan out of Goa, but not Goa out of a Goan. Menino Costa, a social media warrior highlighting issues of his beloved Goa from overseas, has not decided to take the task of saving Goa in his own hands. He has returned to Goa to contest the forthcoming panchayat elections from Guirdolim, Salcete.

Love for his village has brought a Guirdolim youth back to Goa, and contest the upcoming village panchayat elections on August 10 to save his ward and village from destruction.

Facebook user Menino Costa, who works abroad, and filed a nomination on Monday (July 25) will contest from Ward Number three in the Guirdolim Panchayat.

On the other hand, on the last day, 179 aspiring candidates filed their nomination papers for the 33 panchayats in Salcete taluka, taking the total tally to 994.

Menino Costa is active on social media highlighting the social and political issues affecting Goa. In his videos that have gone viral, he has shown concern for his motherland, despite working abroad.

“I have concern for my village and the State. I have often noticed people agitating to seek justice pertaining to government schemes and other issues. It has been also brought to my notice that many previous panch members have failed to take up the issues related to the village”, he said.

Menino said, “I am upset and hence rushed to Goa to contest the panchayat elections so that justice can be delivered and the issues affecting the people in my village are resolved.”

“I am here to save my ward and village from the destruction”, he added.

According to three returning officers, for the 33 panchayats of Salcete, on the last day, they received a total of 179 nomination papers. And the overall number of nominations has touched 994.

“Scrutiny will be done in the presence of the candidates on July 26 and thereafter opportunity will be given for the withdrawal, if any on July 27 between 10 am and 2 pm”, said Dhiren Banaulikar, Returning Officer.
