Gujarat court rejects anticipatory bail for businessman in liquor smuggling case

CANACONA: In yet another setback for Canacona-based businessman Ligorio D’Souza, Gujarat court has rejected his anticipatory bail petition in connection with the liquor smuggling case.

Bhachau sessions court rejected anticipatory bail application of Ligorio, who has been booked in a similar case earlier. Gujarat police have booked a case under stringent Prohibition Act against him, holding him responsible for smuggling of liquor in the BJP-run dry State.

Interestingly, the local court had earlier rejected his anticipatory bail petition in another case but he managed to get partial relief in Gujarat High Court.

While allowing his anticipatory bail application, the HC had asked him to appear before the Investigating Officer on December 7 at Samhiali police station.

Gujarat police have launched a massive investigation into inter state smuggling racket after a truck registered in Maharashtra was found with huge quantity of liquor.

During the investigation, the investigating officer had zeroed down on Ligorio, who was allegedly the main supplier of the liquor. Gujarat police had arrived in Goa, two times in the past, but had to go back as Ligorio was not traceable.
