PANJIM: The upcoming elections to Goa University Students Council (GUSC) have been embroiled in controversy with two groups backed by BJP and ABVP approaching the police against each other.
Prabha Naik, an ABVP activist, who is contesting election for the post of Lady Member of GUSC, has alleged political interference into the election scheduled on August 16.
The matter which was first raised with the DSW, Registrar and Vice Chancellor took an ugly turn when around 50 persons manhandled the complainant and another student.
“We were today called by DSW for discussion about our complaint at 4 pm at DSW office. Therefore around 50 persons pertaining to political party (referring to BJP) were present at university campus. During the course of discussion, the DSW instructed us to get evidence of political interference in the university election. We requested the DSW to take note of the fact that within the campus itself there were activists of political party within the vicinity of the office of the DSW itself,” she said in a three-page complaint letter to the Women’s Police on Wednesday night.
She stated that ABVP activists attempted to take photographs to gather further evidence to DSW during which members of the other group led by one Kareena Shirodkar arrogantly attacked and threatened them with dire consequences.
“Shirodkar demanded that we should give our mobiles to her failing which she will finish us there and then. Thereafter, she aggressively snatched the mobile phone belonging to Poojan Priolkar and while doing so, she further threatened us that if we try to react to this, then they will vanish us. Such a conduct within the campus of the university itself clearly amounts to manhandling and illegal infringement of our personal rights and also our safety,” she added.
The complainants apprehended that the mobile phone could be misused by Shirodkar and her group as it has been in their custody.
On the other hand, a counter complaint was also filed but details were not available till late hours.
Police sources told Herald that they have initiated an inquiry into both the complaints.
