Governor S S Sidhu on Sunday described Chief Minister Digambar Kamat as a dynamic Chief Minister and PWD Minister Churchill Alemao as a popular leader and a friend of the common man.
He was speaking after felicitating Kamat and Alemao at a function organized by the Dalit Seva Sanghatana, Goa at the Ravindra Bhavan here on Sunday morning.
Governor said, “In Kamat, you have a dynamic chief minister, who accords top priority for people’s welfare. But, what is significant is that the chief minister in a true spirit of democracy entertains public criticism of policies and programmes so as to take corrective steps. This quality enhances the public prestige of a leader”.
He further said “during my two and half years stay in Goa, I have watched the chief minister function actively for providing maximum benefits of the government schemes to the people. He reaches out to the needy people, who require timely relief”.
In respect of the PWD minister, the Governor said that Alemao is a popular leader and a friend of the common man needs no emphasis.
He is always in the forefront of public cause, which requires special mention. He is an active minister, reaching out to the people requiring his support and assistance in whatever form it may be”.
In addition, the Governor said that Alemao’s contribution in the field of sports, particularly football, is well recognized by the people”.
The governor said that significant steps have been taken by the country since Independence to provide opportunities for the Dalits in the field of education and employment, but added that a lot of ground still needs to be covered for the emancipation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Saying that the country is committed to build a welfare state, the Governor said India’s success lies in empowering every citizen, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
In his address, the Chief Minister lauded the role played by the Dalit Seva Sanghatana for the upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden sections of society.
He said that his government will not allow any injustice to the Dhangar community, and expressed his government’s commitment to include the community in the ST community. “I have petitioned to the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram on the inclusion of Dhangars in the ST community. He has assured to look into the matter”, Kamat said.
In his address, PWD Minister Churchill Alemao said he had distributed the water tanks to the poor considering the hardships faced by them in times of water scarcity.
He also appealed to the Chief Minister to support Konkani in Roman script to save and protect the identity of Goa and Goans.
The Chief Minister later felicitated various personalities for their contribution to their respective fields of activity.
