PONDA: Advocating the need for a fresh dimension in social reforms and empowering people especially women, Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo has urged social organisations to work in the direction.
Wanchoo was speaking after inaugurating the programme to mark the centenary celebration of Gomantak Bhandari Samaj at Ponda on Sunday which was attended by thousands of people.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, PWD and Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar, Cooperation Minister Deepak Dhavlikar, North Goa MP Shripad Naik, Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar, Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar, St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh, former chief minister Ravi Naik, former Fatorda MLA Damu Naik and GBS President Anil Hoble were present on the occasion.
“Social reforms have always been an integral part of our history and our country has produced several social reformers who devoted their lives to the cause of the country and its people. I strongly feel social reforms should now find a fresh dimension with the youth of our country. It is the duty of organisations like Gomantak Bhandari Samaj to educate youth and inculcate in them the values of social relationship, social harmony and social solidarity and social reforms so that our society is free from problems that impact our progress and growth,” said Wanchoo.
“There is a need to empower the people especially the traditionally disadvantaged society if we are to achieve progress and success. Such occasions help us to understand the issue of social reforms which is important to bringing about qualitative changes in the living conditions of our people,” added Wanchoo.
“I would like to call upon all the thinking members of the society to dedicate themselves to the cause of society, particularly less fortunate women. Women form 50 per cent of the population and without their positive contribution, we as a nation cannot achieve the desired progress and growth,” said Wanchoo
Complimenting GBS, Parrikar said, “As assured, government has decided to implement 27 per cent reservations for OBC and within a few days the notification will be issued.”
