GWMC to go slow on bio-toilets

PANJIM: The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) at its board meeting held, on Monday, decided to go slow on the installation of bio toilets in the State for at least two months in order to check the functioning of these toilets in case phenyl is used in cleaning them.
The Minister for Waste Management, Michael Lobo said, “about 17150 beneficiaries have applied, and the government has  issued work order to five contractors allowing each of them to install 500 bio toilets. We have asked the contractors to go slow in installing the toilets and asked them to install first 50 bio toilets to check how this technology works on bacteria if the phenyl is used in cleaning the toilets.”
“We want to see how phenyl reacts with bacteria. If it dies then the project will be a failure and then we will have to return to conventional method of septic and soak pit but with improvised technology. However, the delay will not affect in achieving ODF target because the community toilets are already provided,” the Minister added.
He further said that the meeting of high-level committee headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is fixed with Margao, Curtorim and Fatorda MLAs on Tuesday to arrive at an amicable solution to the dispute between the Margao Municpal Council and Fomento Green.
“During the board meeting, we have finalised to award the contract to L1 category contractor to remediate immediately 2.35 lakh cubic metre of Sonsodo waste and segregate mixed waste and RDF will be sent to cement kilns,” he said.
