QUEPEM, JUNE 25
The Goenchea Xetkaranch Ekvott (GXE) has filed a complaint before the Flying Squad, South Goa, alleging filling of low-lying paddy field with mud adjacent to Salaulim irrigation canal, opposite Quepem civil court.
In a complaint dated June 1, filed before the Flying Squad, the GXE stated that after verifying fertile command area of the paddy field, adjacent to Salaulim irrigation canal, it is found that the field is filled with mud by a depth of about 2 mtrs.
The GXE claimed that on both the sides of the paddy field, which is filled with mud, the Selaulim irrigation canal passes.
Speaking to reporters, GXE President Dilip Hegde said if prime agricultural land with irrigation facilities is allowed to be converted, then in the future there will be hardly any land for cultivation.
“If the land is not cultivated, then what we are going to eat? A nullah passes by the side of the paddy field and if the filling is not removed and land not restored to its original position, then the nullah may be blocked in the years to come, which will destroy adjacent paddy fields due to water logging,” he said.
“Though official compliant has been lodged before the Flying Squad about a month back, no sincere efforts are being made by the authority to revert back the land to its original position. Are the authorities serious on protecting agricultural land,” asked Hegde.
When contacted, Flying Squad member Francis Rodrigues said upon receipt of the complaint, their team visited the site, took the photographs and issued show cause notice to the concerned owner to immediately stop the work.
“The Flying Squad has forwarded the show cause notice to the Town and Country Planning department Quepem for further action,” added Rodrigues.
When contacted, TCP officials informed that the survey number in which filling is done is totally illegal. They further informed that their office has filed a complaint with Quepem police against the owner from Borimol-Sirvoi, Quepem.
However when contacted, Quepem Police informed that they are yet to register FIR against the owner.
