VASCO: The Mormugao municipality has confiscated handcarts and gaddas encroaching on roads, pathways and footpaths in Vasco. The municipality has vowed to make this a continuous exercise to keep public spaces free from encroachment.
The municipal chairperson said that the town residents have complained to him that the roads, pathways and footpaths in the town have been encroached on by handcarts selling fruits, vegetables and other items. And of late, this encroachment has become rampant.
Following the complaint, the chairperson said, the municipality has restarted a drive to clear the encroachments and that it would be a continuous activity.
“I have begun taking strict action against the illegal carts since the day I took over. This will continue till every cart encroaching on public spaces is removed,” the municipal chairperson said.
He informed that the confiscated carts would be returned after imposing a nominal fine. “At the council meeting scheduled on October 30, we will discuss and fix the fine amount to be imposed on the violators; later, we will probably take a relook at the amount imposed,” he said.
Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar said that illegal carts have increased substantially in Vasco and are occupying various public spots causing nuisance and inconvenience to public. “Therefore, this time, we have agreed that third time violators may have to be fined heavily and cancel their licence if the violation continues,” Salkar said.
