PONDA: With the expansion of bypass from Baytakhol to Curti in its final phase, the Bethora locals claimed that they are forced to spend sleepless nights on account of the haphazard parking of heavy vehicles on the widened road, which they fear, could lead to major accidents and demanded stringent action against the owners of these vehicles.
Over the past few days, heavy vehicles are seen parked along the widened road, posing increased risks to the locals. The locals complained that drivers and cleaners were seen by parking their vehicles on the roadside and answering nature’s call and the residents feared this could lead to health hazards.
The locals said with vehicles parked on both sides, pedestrians are finding it difficult to cross the road. To add to their woes, they further claimed that drivers cook food by the roadside.
The containers and other heavy vehicles proceed to the industrial estates of Bethora, Kundaim, Madkai, Verna and Usgao and parking of vehicles led to fatal accident last month wherein a youth riding on bike lost his life after hitting a vehicle parked along the road.
Bethora sarpanch Madhu Khandeparkar said that road widening and parking of heavy vehicles could lead to accidents.
The panchayat had previously submitted representations to both traffic police and PWD seeking immediate action.
