CUNCOLIM: The newly-elected Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday, in its first meeting, decided to approve Yuri Alemao’s proposal of repairing the Freedom Fighter Memorial on behalf of the council at his own cost.

CMC team was majorly backed by opposition and its Yuri was mentor of its chairman Laxman Naik, and now the coffer being empty they are hard up to keep their promised development work in the municipal area.

“The Freedom Fighters’ Memorial would be repaired with the funds of Yuri Alemao as there is no fund in the municipal coffers to repair the monument,” said Naik.

However, this proposal was opposed by opposition councillors Videsh Desai and Rahul Desai. Videsh and Rahul argued that the memorial can be repaired with the help of municipal funds or government funds. “Why we need funds from politician?” Videsh questioned Naik.

Ronnie Dias, a social activist too expressed his opposition to the proposal in writing and warned that the municipality would face stiff opposition if they play with sentiments of the Cuncolkars.

Local MLA Clafacio Dias warned that he will lodge a complaint with the Urban Development Department. “It’s wrong on Ruling Council’s part to ask help from a politician for prestigious project,” said Dias.

However Naik said there is nothing wrong with the proposal and if anyone proves that the proposal is illegal and not morally correct he is ready to resign.

Meanwhile, in the first meeting of the council various committees were formed like standing committee, waste management committee, market committee, pollution control committee, arts and sports committee were formed.

The council decided to start pre-monsoon works.
