SANGUEM: Fire gutted a hardware shop doubling as a godown for coconuts at Rivona causing a loss of around Rs 10 lakh.
It is learnt that the fire apparently broke out due to a short circuit in the intervening night of October 14-15 and by the time the fire services arrived, the attic and roof were totally gutted.
Shop owner Sajjan Naik rushed to the shop on receiving the news and sought Sarpanch Vaishali Gaonkar’s help to summon the fire services.
Villagers valiantly tried to douse the fire before the arrival of the fire services but to no avail.
Fire tenders from Curchorem and Quepem fire stations rushed to the site and though they could not save the shop, they prevented the fire from spreading to other shops.
