PORVORIM: The State Government has directed the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) to have a complete overview of the development of the St Inez nallah hydraulically, hierologically and ecologically to ensure avert flooding situations along the areas of Camrabhat and surrounding during the monsoon season.
Minister for Water Resources Dayanand Mandrekar told the House that the major part of the Panjim city is drained by St Inez nallah. “There are many reasons for the inundations of the areas. The various developments, right from Taleigao to Panjim, had reduced the infiltration in the ground and increased the quantum of water in the nallah,” he explained.
“Further, the nallah is prone to tidal effects right up to Camrabhat and most of the detention basins which stored the storm water during the high tides have disappeared due to various developments,” he said replying to a calling attention motion moved by Congress MLA Jennifer Monserrate raising the concern of locals in the area due to flooding every year.
The minister said that the rivulet has to be maintained regularly by desilting.
“A complete overview of the development of the St Inez nallah hydraulically, hierologically and ecologically, should be ensured by the City corporation, by providing some detention basins, keeping no development zones, replacing pipe culverts by box culverts in phased and scientific manner and providing proper waterways,” Mandrekar explained.
