PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Thursday asked the family of social activist late Bismarque Dias whether they are ready to give an undertaking that if a superior officer of Goa Police or Dean of GMC says on affidavit that Dias’ mortal remains are not required for further investigation, they will not dispute it and perform the last rites.
The High Court asked Dias’ family to remain present in court on Friday to reply. In petitions filed before the High Court, the court had granted Crime Branch eight weeks to investigate the Dias death and submit the report.
On November 9, 2017, HC had asked Crime Branch to complete the investigation in the case in eight weeks and extended it by another eight weeks last month.
Dias’ family had challenged the order of the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) directing the North Goa Collector to issue suitable directions in accordance with law to dispose his body which is lying in the morgue at Goa Medical College since November 2015.
Dias, a well known activist and environment crusader, went missing on November 5, 2015 under mysterious circumstances in St Estevam Island. His body was found two days later in a tributary of River Mandovi. Bismarque’s body has still not been claimed by the family who is demanding a thorough investigation in the murder case.
