HC exploring possibilities to recover losses due to illegal sand extraction in Ragada River

AG Pangam told the Court that the government is very serious about recovery and is contemplating auctioning the seized machinery.

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the State government to file further compliance report in the Ragada River illegal sand extraction recovery proceedings.

The committee appointed by the Court has filed a part compliance report on the illegal sand extraction case recovery proceedings and is exploring all possibilities to recover all the losses and damages that have been caused due to the illegal activities. 

The High Court had asked whether the plant and machinery that was seized during criminal proceedings could be auctioned and whether permission of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMCF) would be needed to do so. To this, Advocate General Devidas Pangam informed that almost Rs 23 lakh have been recovered after sale of the properties of the person who was arrested for illegal sand extraction. Further recoveries are on and the Court is also exploring more ways of recovering the money from the accused person,” said AG Pangam. 

AG Pangam told the Court that the government is very serious about recovery and is contemplating auctioning the seized machinery. As per the estimates of the Directorate of Mines and Geology, more than Rs 1 crore has to be recovered from the accused.
